South East Cambridgeshire Labour called on the Conservative government, including our local MP Lucy Frazer, to support Labour’s motion yesterday asking for the the following action to be taken:
- P&O workforce reinstated and legal action taken against P&O
- Government contracts to be suspended
- Fire and rehire to be outlawed
- Workers rights strengthened
We are shocked that the Conservatives chose to abstain on this motion and have made it clear that they will not be taking the vital action that Labour has called for to protect P&O seafarers and many other British workers beside.
Uroga Okello, SE Cambridgeshire’s employment spokesman said ‘In the past few days, the Conservatives have been crying crocodile tears about the sacking by P&O of 800 British seafarers in such a callous manner. Given the opportunity to actually do something about it by supporting Labour’s motion, and ensure that further such disgraceful treatment of British workers cannot take place, this government has chosen to turn its face away. We are surprised that Mrs Frazer, as a QC, is content to see the employment rights of British workers thrown away like this.’
