SE Cambridgeshire Labour urges the Government to take strong action to protect British jobs at P&O Ferries and elsewhere

SE Cambs Labour’s employment Spokesperson and candidate for Fen Ditton and Fulbourn Uroga Okello said;

It’s shocking that P&O Ferries sacked 800 staff without notice and employed security staff to drag them off the ships they were working on.

Being an inland constituency of course SE Cambs does not have a port.  But what’s happening to these seafarers could happen to any British worker.

That a business feels it can get away with this in Britain is a scandal and shows what weak employment laws we have.

The Government should be using its powers to show P&O Ferries that their action is unacceptable

  • Remove DP World (P&O Ferries’ parent company) from the UK Government’s Transport Advisory Group.
  • Claw back £10 million of taxpayers’ cash that was handed to P&O Ferries for furlough to protect jobs

And most importantly, outlaw the practice known as ‘Fire and Rehire’.  Labour will make this the Opposition Day topic tomorrow,  Monday 21 March.

Okello went on to make a direct plea to South East Cambridgeshire MP, Lucy Frazer

A Labour move to tackle ‘Fire and Rehire’ was voted down by the Conservatives just six months ago. And, Lucy Frazer, you were one of the MPs helping to get this thrown out.

Now you have a chance to make amends. A chance to make sure workers are consulted on any moves like this. A chance to introduce independent review as to whether a company has sound business reasons. An important chance.

Lucy Frazer – please take this chance to side with British Workers and against bad bosses.
