SE Cambs Labour says the Government must lead by example on Covid rules and stop wasting time trying to pretend that parties are work meetings.
As the Conservative Government is beset with allegations of lockdown-busting parties, SE Cambs Labour calls for them to regain public trust and focus on vital public health messaging.
The list of parties held by the Conservatives during lockdown continues to grow. There are multiple allegations of parties at Downing Street along with those at Conservative Campaign HQ and the Departments for Education and for Transport.
After South East Cambridgeshire Labour wrote to MP Lucy Frazer about this, the party has been contacted by a number of very angry local residents who have also written to her. They wanted to express their disgust at the partying in Government while they were unable to visit sick relatives, see their families or even attend funerals of loved ones.
They received near-identical emails in reply.
And the reply is notable in what it lacks and is woefully out of date.
Despite being sent on 21st December, Ms Frazer says that the Cabinet Secretary will be leading an inquiry. Yet, Simon Case, the Cabinet Secretary had to quit the role leading the investigation after it emerged that a party took place in his own office. She also refers to the inquiry only covering three parties, those on 18th December, 10th December and 27th November. However, the inquiry has been widened to cover the many further parties and ‘gatherings’ that have come to light over the last couple of weeks.
Ms Frazer says she was not in Downing Street on 18th December last year, but doesn’t mention any of the other parties that have been reported in the press, including those for which photos and videos are in the public domain.
Rebecca Denness of SE Cambs Labour said
“At a time when our Country desperately needs leadership and clear direction, we have a Prime Minister too weak to make decisions. We have ministers appearing on TV to make pathetic excuses such as it was a work meeting because people wore suits. It would be laughable were it not so deadly serious.
“None of them seem able to apologise for or recognise the damage they have done to Public Health messaging and that includes our MP, Ms Frazer.
“The Prime Minister is investigating whether a party took place in his own building, it is bordering on the ridiculous. Why doesn’t he just end the investigation by admitting these parties took place and be straight with the British public? The hurt that he is causing to so many who followed the rules, like the bereaved families who were unable to say goodbye to their loved ones, is immense. They now realise that he and his government believed that those rules only applied to us, not to them.”
“The rules have been broken and heads need to roll. Above all, the Government urgently needs to re-establish Public Trust so that we can all pull together to defeat Omicron which is racing through the community. Case rates are up by at least 40% in the past week in both South and East Cambridgeshire.
“We want to see the Government, including our own MP Ms Frazer leading by example and living strictly within both the spirit and letter of the law, rather than taking the public for fools.”
