Council tax bill

A month after SCDC held an Extraordinary Council meeting devoted to the topic of its accounts, local residents are still none the wiser about how local taxes are being spent.

Lib Dem South Cambs District Council is struggling to meet its basic financial obligations. Labour has repeatedly called for action while the Lib Dems constantly break their promises to sort the mess out.

Elizabeth McWilliams, SE Cambs Labour Local Government Spokesperson says:

“I have been concerned about the lack of accounts at South Cambs for some time and every day that passes, my worries grow.

“Every day that is passing, more consultants’ fees are racked up, money that is desperately needed in these tough times for vital services for our community.

“And every day that is passing is one less day that the electors of South Cambridgeshire have to find out exactly what the Lib Dems have been doing with their money.

“I have again written to the Lead Councillor on Finance at the Council requesting an urgent update on the position. Residents and taxpayers in South Cambs have the right to know what is going on.”

Here is the text of Elizabeth’s letter

Dear John Williams,

Please can you urgently update the position on South Cambs District Council’s accounts.  As you know, I have been worried for sometime about the failure of SCDC to produce its audited accounts since 2018/19 – the year that the Lib Dems took control.

At the Extraordinary Council meeting held on 18 October, you reported that the accounts sign-off would be delayed until November.  We are now over half way through November so you must surely know if this latest promise will be met or broken with yet more delays.

Three serious concerns were raised by the external auditors at the last meeting of the audit and local governance committee on 28 September, to the extent that they were planning to report significant weaknesses in the Value for Money arrangements at the Council during 2020/21.

Furthermore, they were considering issuing statutory recommendations to the Council under Section 24 Schedule 7 of the Local Accountability and Audit Act 2014, which could lead to the Council being placed under ‘Special Measures’.

This is very worrying for those of us who live locally here in South Cambs.

It’s a vital part of democracy that any elected body has up-to-date accounts. Yet, here we are three and a half years after the Lib Dems took control and still no information as to how you are spending public money or whether the books are balanced.

Please can you provide an update, not just to me but via your website so that any interested local resident can see it for themselves.

Elizabeth McWilliams
