Dr Nik has held bus summits with all the local bus companies, exchanged knowledge with the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, and held a bus forum with all the other Labour metro Mayors
This is all helping to build the case to take back control of our buses through franchising.
Ambition is important. Learning from others matters. But that means nothing, if we don’t see results.

In recent weeks we’ve seen
- Launch of the ‘ting’ bus service trail in West Huntingdonshire. It’s an ‘Uber’ style service. Passengers book an on-demand, tailor-made service in real time by using the ting trips app, or calling a local call centre. £2 single fare.
- Success for the Zero Emission bus bid. 30 new all-electric buses will be coming to Cambridge next year, mainly working the Park & Ride routes. They will help make a 40% reduction in emissions, improving air quality.

At the moment, bus users are being frustrated and inconvenienced by less frequent services and short-notice cancellations. This is knock-on from the HGV crisis as qualified drivers are tempted away by higher pay elsewhere. Again, Dr Nik is taking practical steps.
An extra 45 HGV driver training courses have already started and are free. It’s using funds from the Adult Education budget. The training includes work experience and a guaranteed job interview.
