A blog by Sam Mathieson, Labour candidate for Soham North
It’s hard when you are young. No-one understands you and there are so many pressures to deal with. It’s harder now than ever, I see that in my teenaged children. Pressures to succeed, pressures from social media, pressure to find a good job. The list goes on.
I was once that young person lacking in confidence. And then I discovered kickboxing. And I loved it! I’d found something I enjoyed and was good at. It really boosted my self-esteem.
I even made it into the BCKA England kickboxing squad. I was so proud to represent my country and that the national team put its faith in me.
Staying active is important for wellbeing throughout life. I qualified as a Physical Training Instructor when I served in the military and keep active to this day. I know the benefits of it from developing ambition, enjoyment and confidence in youth to staying fit and healthy in later life.
There’s a saying that “you have to see it to be it”. We’ve seen that effect in the past few days with young people flocking to play tennis following Emma Raducanu’s victory in the US Open Championship.
However much you want to be it, you have to start somewhere and that means you need the facilities close by.
I will be a strong supporter of Soham maintaining and improving its sporting facilities. I was really excited during the Olympics to see the newer sports such as freestyle BMX, skateboarding and Sport Climbing. It just shows the range of sports there are, I believe there is a sport for everyone.
