Today, I was forced to withdraw my motion calling for an investigation into the inequalities of the fair funding formula. The text of the motion I was intending to propose can be found here.

The reason I was forced to withdraw it is because the Conservatives introduced a wrecking amendment to it, which turned my critical motion of the government’s approach to funding LAs into gushing praise of the government and CCC’s Conservative administration. If that wasn’t bad enough, the amendment contained the following paragraph:

Lastly, it is recognised that whilst this motion is improved by this amendment, it does make it difficult to read and its impact would therefore be lost under the normal minutes and records of the meeting. Council therefore asks that a clean, non-tracked version be released by the communications team as a statement to the media, highlighted by a press release, in its amended entirety except for this final paragraph. Acknowledging Cllr Meschini’ s valuable role as proposer for bringing this important matter forward, and that a link to that statement be published on the front page of the Councils website, until purdah.

I believe this constitutes a grave threat of misrepresentation and slander, and I also believe that I was bullied into withdrawing my motion rather than have to face the consequence of the County Council using its own media to put words in my mouth with which I do not agree.

I attempted to explain this as I was withdrawing my motion today, but I was interrupted. Below is the short explanation I was intending to give.

Explanatory notes.
