We all know the lines now “Stay at home, protect the NHS, Save lives”. With a third national lockdown in place it comes as some surprise to learn that the Liberal Democrat party are still encouraging activists to get out and deliver leaflets to households! Both Labour and the Conservatives ordered this activity to stop when the lockdown was announced.
Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner has written to the Liberal Democrats leader, Ed Davey, to say she is “deeply concerned” by his party’s continued activity. The LibDems are justifying their action claiming this is within the spirit of regulations that allows people to volunteer! Their president, Mark Pack stated “Our local volunteers have a valuable part to play in helping keep their residents informed about important issues..”
SE Cambs Labour’s Tim Andrews, who has been volunteering for his local Covid mutual aid group throughout the pandemic said “We all want to get back out on the doorstep and talk to voters but it is just not possible at the moment”.
We are all aware of the Lib Dem’s propensity for printed material, despite their alleged green credentials! Many constituents in SE Cambs received a tsunami of paper from them in 2019’s general election with some households receiving over 20 leaflets during the campaign.
With Covid rates remaining high in our area we owe it to our health service and their staff to obey the rules and stay home.
Your local Labour party will continue to campaign safely and we look forward to meeting voters face to face again when this becomes an option. In the meantime stay safe!
