As with many sequels they become formulaic, starring a cast well beyond their sell by date. The latest announcement by the Prime Minister comes as no exception. Ignoring scientific advice and succumbing to the inevitable only after intolerable harm has been caused has become a sadly predictable pattern.
Nobody wanted to see the closure of schools but the writing has been on the wall for some time. The government ignored opportunities for circuit breaks that would have slowed the progress of the disease but now it’s too late, the virus is out of control. Some areas in our constituency have seen infection rates rise by over 200% in the last week alone. Our health service is under immense pressure. One frontline worker at Addenbrookes said,
“It’s relentless at the moment with Covid patient after Covid patient coming through. These people are really sick, you can see the panic in their eyes as they struggle to get enough air into their lungs.”
“What is really worrying is that we already have more Covid+ patients than the spring yet that peak did not occur until about three weeks into that lockdown.”
Time and again this government has made false promises. The moonshot testing program and the world beating track & trace have failed to materialise despite swallowing billions of pounds of public money. It will come as no surprise that our local MP, an enthusiastic supporter of Mr Johnson, has said very little throughout.
We need clear, coherent, decisive leadership on both a national and a local level. We have received none at any point. The mismanagement of this pandemic should never be forgotten.
