During this by-election Rebecca and her team are visiting every household door to door. We are keen to hear views and to discuss Labour’s alternative. In this blog, we are highlighting the issues raised on the doorstep.
One of the main reactions on the doorstep has been ‘Another election! Why?’. After County, Mayoral and General elections this year Ely South residents have queried the timing and expense of the by-election.
Ex-councillor Tom Hunt has resigned his seat in Ely South to become a highly paid “political adviser” to Mayor Palmer (previously Tory leader of East Cambs DC). It is not clear why the Mayor needs a political adviser.
People have been shocked to read that the new Mayor’s private office will cost tax payers a staggering £1.8m a year. Few of the new staff are necessary as the expertise already exists in the 7 councils that constitute the new Combined Authority. The money would be better spent on schools, additional police officers or road maintenance. Compare that with Palmer’s claims about running a lean operation during his election campaign. This is so typical of local Tories – big claims but little action; Scrooge like on spending on basic services like cleaning, public toilets and maintenance but generous on their own preferred projects.
