The scandal of Cambridgeshire’s spiralling housing costs.
According to the Valuation Office Agency, rent rises locally have increased by an average of 11-12% in the past year, making this one the most expensive for housing outside of London.
The Government’s Right to Buy Scheme has been widely condemned. Even local Tories have criticised the scheme as ‘unworkable‘. When asked about the policy, Tory MP for South Cambs, Heidi Allen said, ‘Government housing policies won’t work here‘. Current housing proposals, including the huge development at Waterbeach Barracks, don’t meet local need, or address the issue of affordability.
Young people are unable to afford to leave home and move on with their lives. Key workers struggle to move into the area, having a direct impact on business and essential services such as the NHS.
The area desperately needs social housing for rent. Only the Labour Party will embark on the renewal of Britain’s housing stock, replenishing council housing stock decimated by progressive Conservative administrations.
