ELY BLOG

A few days ago news broke about the possible closure of the Ely Princess of Wales Minor Injuries Unit.  As an update and a summary of the increasingly complex options for services at the hospital here is a longer than usual article. This has been compiled using information from the Keep Our NHS Public campaign who have tracked Cambridgeshire’s deteriorating health services for some time.

East Cambridgeshire District Council’s latest scheme to run into major opposition is its application (to itself) to develop part of the Barton Road car park for a small housing development. This is just the latest of a series of poorly judged initiatives from the increasingly hapless Tory administration.

In this video for Spotted in Ely, Labour’s Mark Hucker spells out what is wrong with the scheme and how the Tory councilors are unable to stick to their own plans.

Last September in our Labour Voice news-sheet we flagged concerns about the future of outpatient services at the Princess of Wales Hospital. It now seems that these fears were justified. The Cambridge and Peterborough Clinical Commissioning Group have, rather quietly, issued a news release revealing a potential closure of the clinics.

A recent press article in the Cambridge Evening News has quoted East Cambs District Council Tory Leader James Palmer as suggesting that the district would be better to join with Norfolk and Suffolk than the rest of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. This strange comment follows the council being the first and only council in the county to back the Government’s plans for devolution to East Anglia.

With traffic and travel a growing issue for many people, this should be a timely, much needed initiative. However the signs from the consultation are not encouraging. We have pulled together four key concerns about the strategy:

It would be good to write a blog post about local issues without having to be critical of Tory run East Cambs District Council or the Tory/UKIP led County Council. The trouble is they supply new material on an almost daily basis.

Ely student Will Law’s campaign against plans for fast food outlets in the new leisure development, and very close to Ely College, has gained a good deal of press coverage and significant support. MP Lucy Frazer has even become involved. Irrespective of the eventual success of the campaign, it has been highly effective in shining a light on the activities of East Cambs Planning Committee.
