Ely South is bordered by the A10 Ely bypass and many people have voiced their concerns about congestion, traffic noise and air pollution. These are issues affecting almost everyone in the ward, whether commuting or shopping in Ely.
On the A10 and A142, in the morning and late afternoon, leading up to the Witchford Road roundabout, there is queuing traffic. Add to this congestion around the centre of town most days, shortage of parking spaces, poor road maintenance and overcrowded commuter trains to Cambridge and London. With Ely’s growing population this can only become more of a problem.
The Tories have no plan to deal with the problems only piecemeal solutions designed to grab headlines not provide a long-term solution. The Ely by-pass, whilst easing congestion around the station will inevitably lead to increased traffic on the A142 as the route becomes quicker as a through route. Traffic queuing at the Witchford roundabout will increase. The Tory plan to improve the A10 to Cambridge will bring some safety benefits but again fails to think through the long-term impact of increased traffic on the Ely by-pass and on the homes nearby.
We need a traffic and transport plan for the Ely area that is based on realistic longer term thinking about how to deal with a growing population. Improved public transport to Cambridge and the villages would be at the heart of the plan. Within Ely, we would prioritise safety for cyclists and pedestrians and work to a proper plan not just minor changes or personal projects that the current Tory councillors seem to prefer.
